We’ve a bold plan for the North to renew and recover in the year ahead. Our Business Plan for 2021/22 plan sets out how, in providing one voice for the North, TfN will make transport in the North sustainable and inclusive, and grow the region’s economy. It details how delivering on our 30-year blueprint for investment in our infrastructure will be central to the national mission to level-up the UK and build back better than what has come before.
Leaders of the North have agreed on a preferred network for Northern Powerhouse Rail – a huge upgrade to the North’s railways which will unlock the prosperity of the region in the decades ahead.
Innovation is regarded as a strong driver of productivity and economic growth. The North has a significant array of science and innovation assets, but is currently punching below its weight in terms of innovation and the economic contribution it makes. This unique study was commissioned to explore the nature of innovation networks in the North of England, and to understand the key drivers, enablers and barriers to those processes. The work was undertaken by Cambridge Econometrics in partnership with the University of Sheffield, Oxford Brookes University and the University of Dublin. It was funded and managed by Transport for the North, in collaboration with the N8, the NP11 and Innovate UK.

This note sets out five important societal factors that could have an influence on future travel and the uncertainties surrounding them when thinking forward to 2050. Its aim is to generate discussion about how these may play out in the region in future and the potential impacts on travel.
