Transport for the North has written to Chancellor Rachel Reeves, to make the case for protecting and boosting transport funding in the upcoming Spending Review.
In an open letter, the North’s statutory sub-national transport body said that without a long-term commitment to rail, road and bus investment, the North risks missing out on £118 billion in potential annual Gross Value Added (GVA) gains. The letter outlines the North’s pressing needs for a number of key transport projects, including the full delivery of Northern Powerhouse Rail, upgrades to key routes like the A66 and TransPennine corridor, and sustained support for local transport services, including buses.
Chair Lord McLoughlin stressed that transformation requires investment beyond a single Parliament and called for devolved funding flexibility, stronger local control, and recognition of the North’s distinct economic needs.
