In the North more than 3 million people are at high risk of being socially excluded because of inadequate and poorly performing transport systems.

Improvements to bus services are essential if our ambitions for enhanced economic, social and environmental outcomes are to be realised.

Enhancing social inclusion and health is one of our three core ambitions

Travel by bus accounts for around 86%1 of public transport trips in the North and 42%2 of distance travelled by public transport. Good local bus services are especially critical for lower income households reliant on public transport to get to work, to education opportunities, health services and to access everyday activities such as visiting family and friends.

What we're doing

TfN supports plans within the Better Buses Bill to empower MCAs/LTAs to choose the most appropriate delivery model for improving bus services in their area. Through our Bus Forum we will work with partners to facilitate sharing of knowledge, evidence of good practice and where appropriate support a coordinated approach to communication with government on common challenges for the bus sector. We will also provide access to bus network planning software and plan to publish data on bus network accessibility and reliability.
